Have you ever tried telling a story without sound? Stories without sound can be pretty bland. Now, imagine sound, not just interview sound but sound from the event or people you are capturing. I recently had an opportunity to create a story about a young boxer who has won a major boxing championship. During the shoot I put a mic on the young boxer’s father who happens to be his trainer too. The sound that I was able to gather from his father was remarkable. I was able to use some of the trainer’s voice to help tell the story. Nat sound is very important for several reasons. It can help tell the story and it can break up the story so that it has personality. I shot this story for Fresno Unified and I am thankful that they allowed me to be as creative as I could be. So next time before you shoot your story brainstorm nat sound possibilities, and try to capture them.
